Is TMS Right for You? Understanding Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Depression

Depression affects millions of adults, and while medications and therapy help many, some still struggle with persistent symptoms. For those who haven’t found relief through traditional treatments, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) offers a promising, non-invasive option.

At Blue Umbrella Psychiatry, we provide TMS therapy at our modern Davie location as part of comprehensive care for adults facing treatment-resistant depression.

What Is TMS?

TMS is an FDA-approved treatment for adults with major depressive disorder who have not responded adequately to antidepressants. It uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain involved in mood regulation, helping to restore healthy brain activity.

How Does TMS Work?

During a typical TMS session, a magnetic coil is positioned near the scalp to deliver focused magnetic pulses. These pulses activate nerve cells in the prefrontal cortex—the brain region associated with mood and motivation.

Sessions usually last 20 to 40 minutes and are administered five days a week for about six weeks.

Who Is a Candidate for TMS?

TMS may be appropriate if you:

  • Have not found sufficient relief with at least one antidepressant medication

  • Prefer a non-medication or non-invasive approach

  • Experience moderate to severe depressive symptoms

  • Have no history of seizures or metal implants near the head

Our team conducts a thorough evaluation to determine if TMS is a good fit for you.

Integrated Care at Blue Umbrella Psychiatry

TMS is most effective when combined with ongoing psychiatric care, medication management if needed, and therapy. Our expanded Davie office provides a comfortable environment where you can access these services under one roof.

Taking the Next Step

If depression is interfering with your daily life and past treatments haven’t helped enough, TMS may be the breakthrough you need.
